With every Zendesk account, there can only be one account owner. They're usually the person who first activated the account, and they hold permissions no other admin has — managing the subscription, billing details, certain security settings and transferring ownership itself.
You'll need to know who the owner is any time a change requires their sign-off: adding seats, upgrading a plan, changing the billing contact, or authorising a partner to make subscription changes on your behalf.
This article covers two ways to find them in Admin Center.
Before you start
- You need at least an agent or admin role. Contributors don't have access to the Team members page.
- The account owner always has the Admin support role, so you can narrow a long list by filtering on admins.
Method 1 — The Team members page
This is the quickest way, and it works for both agents and admins.
1. Open Admin Center
From any Zendesk product, click the product picker in the top-left corner and choose Admin center.
2. Go to People → Team → Team members
Click the People icon in the left sidebar, then select Team members under the Team heading.
Tip: you can skip the sidebar entirely. Type
team memberinto the Search admin center box at the top of the page and pick Team members from the results.
3. Look for the "Account owner" label
The Team members page lists everyone in the account. The account owner has a small Account owner badge directly beneath their name.
Here it is up close:
If your account has a lot of team members, click Filter, then under Product and role select Admin for Support. The account owner will be in the shortened list.
Method 2 — The Contacts page (admins only)
Admins can also see the owner alongside all billing admins:
- In Admin Center, click Account in the sidebar.
- Select Billing → Contacts.
- The account owner appears at the top of the contacts list.
Admins see this page in read-only mode. Only the account owner can make changes from here.
Changing the account owner
Only the current account owner can transfer ownership, and the new owner must already be an admin and a billing admin. The change is made from Account → Billing → Contacts.
Two things worth knowing before you do it:
- Zendesk Support cannot change the owner for you. If the current owner has left the business, you'll need IT to recover their mailbox and reset the password, or raise a security review with Zendesk.
- Some integrations are authorised against the owner's user and will need to be reconnected by the new owner after the transfer.
